This week we sat down with a well-loved local mom and owner of Sarasota Musical Theater Company, Priscilla Smith to learn more about her passion for theater and children. Priscilla is one of our twenty featured mom-owned businesses we are proud to support!
How many kids do you have and what are their ages?
I have 7 children. Ages 3, 5, 8,8, 11, 15, and 18. I always wanted a big family even though I was an only child who had a single mom. I loved being around big families and always dreamed of having lots of children.
What do you love about living in the Sarasota area?
We moved to Sarasota because of the water. I love clear water and my children and I love spending time on the beach all year long.
What’s your favorite restaurant and place to shop in Sarasota?
I am a yard sale and thrift store kind of person. I love good healthy food and my favorite is the local seafood!
Tell us about your business.
I am a musical theater teacher and owner of Sarasota Musical Theater Company. We specialize in high energy and confidence building musical theater summer camps as well as one on one coaching for kids who are auditioning or performing.
What do you love about your business?
I love creating a safe space for kids to discover the gifts that already live inside of them and show them how to use those gifts to produce extraordinary results on the stage but most importantly in their lives as a whole.
What are some of your hobbies?
Walking on the beach, handstands, hip hop dancing, gluten free cooking, and playing with my kids.
How do you juggle work and motherhood?
I have always included my children in my career. From holding my baby in a sling while I taught to now having 2 of my older children teaching at my camps. All of my children enjoy participating in my camps. They help me prepare for camps and we love to make it a fun family experience. I can’t imagine doing it without them!
What is the best piece of advice you’ve received from another mom?
“Be yourself, and be true to yourself”.
It’s easy to see why Priscilla has such a huge heart for our children and a desire to help them gain courage, confidence, creativity and compassion through Musical Theater!
