Small Business Spotlight- Ripcurl Lacrosse | The Sarasota Moms

Introducing Ripcurl Lacrosse!

Name of Your Business and location(s):

Ripcurl Lacrosse

When You Opened:

2014

What You Offer:

Ripcurl Lacrosse offers girls and boys youth recreation leagues
as well as competitive travel teams for middle and high schoolers. Both programs
travel to Elite Tournaments and Showcases in Florida and beyond. Ripcurl
Lacrosse runs year-round – beginning September to November, Mid January to
April, and May-June/July. Check out our 4-day Summer Camp in June as a perfect
way to kick-off summer.

Challenges you faced or lessons you learned in 2020:

Ripcurl exercised caution
and shut down our summer travel teams for two weeks as we adjusted to the
news of COVID and new suggested health practices. When Ripcurl reopened, our
coaches worked diligently scheduling private sessions and wearing masks to
keep our players minds and bodies active and engaged even in the midst of
quarantine. When we fully reopened, parents showed their support and thanked
us for an open and safe place for their children to be active and engaged with
their friends. Players were grateful for the chance for camaraderie and positive
focus after extended periods of isolation.
What you’re looking forward to for 2021:
Teammates make the best of friends! While we are looking forward to seeing the
players skills develop on the field, the expansion of the Ripcurl community is
what we are most excited about. Lacrosse is the fastest growing sports program
in Florida and we are excited to be on the forefront of providing an entry for
players in Sarasota.
In addition to our girls program, Coach Kendall, a Sarasota High School Lacrosse
Boys Coach, has joined Ripcurl and is offering semi-private and small group
instruction for boys 10- 14. We hope to roll these boys into a new middle school
travel team by summer. Coach D, a former D1 lacrosse player at University of
Delaware, is doing a phenomenal job with the Middle School Girls Travel Team
and we can’t wait to see them compete this spring and summer. Coach Peters,
from New Canaan, CT is working with our youth and passing on her love of
lacrosse and its healthy lifestyle.
An added benefit of Ripcurl is that 4 of our head coaches are also the head
coaches from our local public high schools (Coach Ashley McLeod, Riverview
and Coach Heather Ballew and Darby Henjum Sarasota High School). This is
extremely exciting as families and players benefit from base concepts at Ripcurl
to take to their high school programs.

Online ordering/curbside/delivery available or teleservices or ways you are
keeping your business safe during COVID?:

Keeping our players and families safe is always a top priority. We have been
following USLacrosse “Safe Return to Play” recommendations.

Ripcurl designates players a safely spaced area to put player’s gear. The players
have no need to touch anything but their personal lacrosse stick. Every time a
player needs a ball they can practice a ground ball pick up. We offer hand
sanitizer at the field as needed. Ripcurl Lacrosse has added an additional Covid
waiver to our registration as well as program procedures if a player or family
member has been exposed or sick.

During the pandemic Ripcurl became a place where players and families felt
connected more than ever. Ripcurl has had a healthy impact as it created
routines, fostered individual and group goals, and truly aided youth and
adolescence in our community as a healthy outlet to release stress.

We are thrilled to be a growing part of the Sarasota community, we’re grateful for
the support of current Ripcurl families and look forward to meeting new families
and players!
